TAARII PROGRAMS

When it is possible for TAARII to establish an institute in Baghdad, core programming will take place on its premises. This will include a Senior Scholar in Residence program, a hostel for visiting US scholars, a library for use by guests, visitors, and Iraqi scholars, and meeting spaces for seminars and lecture series. In the meantime, a variety of academic research programs will be administered by the TAARII offices in Amman and the US.

In addition to its competitions for fellowships for Iraqis and US citizens, TAARII plans to initiate the following activities by 2006:

• An annual prize for the best U.S. dissertation on Iraq
• One or more meetings of U.S. and Iraqi scholars for the purpose of addressing a topic of common interest related to social science methodology, in the setting of contemporary Iraq.
• One translation series to bring modern and contemporary Iraqi poetry, fiction (short stories) and historiography to an English-language audience, and another to bring English-language scholarly research to an Arabic-language audience in Iraq.
• Travel awards for Iraqi scholars to attend professional and scholarly meetings in the U.S., such as the annual Middle Eastern Studies Association (MESA) meeting.
• Sponsorship of panels at appropriate international conferences, such as MESA, American Oriental Society, American Anthropological Association, Rencontre Assyriologique International, and The International Congress of Archaeology in the Ancient Near East.
